Attorney Nicholas J. Plante is a Founding Partner of Higgins and Plante, P.C. and practices throughout the Commonwealth in all areas of probate and family law. 

Nick received his B.A. from Worcester State College in 2002, and his J.D. from Western New England University School of Law in 2005.  While in law school, Nick was the recipient of the first year law student Best Oralist award. During his time in law school Nick served as a lead member of Western New England University’s national Environmental Moot Court Competition, where he was twice won the Best Oralist award. 

Nick practices in all areas of domestic relations and family law including pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements, divorce, child custody, modification and contempt actions.  In addition, Nick leads the firm’s appellate practice, appearing frequently before the Appeals Court and Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts.  A selection of representative cases which have resulted in published decisions in which Nick was lead appellate counsel are located below. 

As part of Nick’s handling of all matters in the Probate and Family Court, Nick handles contested petitions to partition, equity actions and estate probate matters in the Probate and Family Court including representing the estate of Academy Award winning actress Julie Harris.    

Beyond his work in representing private clients, Nick is frequently appointed by the Justices of the Probate and Family Court as a Guardian Ad Litem, Attorney Representing Child, Parent Coordinator, Special Master and Arbitrator as well as in many other roles on behalf of the Court.  

In addition to his Probate Court practice, Nick has also regularly appeared in the District Court and Superior Court in the prosecution and defense of restraining orders.  

As part of his commitment to maintaining excellence in the law, Nick has served as a faculty member alongside a number of Justices of the Probate and Family Court for the Massachusetts Bar Association Continuing Legal Education department lecturing on topics related to appellate practice, the law of removal, trial skills and evidence, post-trial submissions, the interplay between child support and alimony in a post Cavanagh world and has also served as a faculty member for the Legal Assistance Corp of Central Massachusetts divorce representation skills program, for which he co-authored the handbook for the program.   

Nick is a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association and the Worcester Bar Association, where he serves on the Probate and Family Law Committee and the Trial Skills Committee. Nick has also been a member of the Massachusetts Probate and Family Court Inns of Court. 

Nick is a proud graduate of the Worcester Public Schools and a Worcester native.  The son of a Worcester Fire Fighter and early child hood teacher, Nick is married to an elementary school principal and is a proud Dad of two children.  In his spare time, Nick is an avid reader, traveler, art and museum aficionado, and (he would say) gourmet chef.
